Sustainable Potatoes

We’ll be travelling up to Dundee later this week for Potatoes in Practice 2012 – the biggest field potato event in the UK. There’s no doubt that the potato sector has its own unique set of challenges – be they diffuse water pollution risks, soil structural issues and the use of specific pesticides and nutrients. Added to this, climate change is, and will have an increasing impact on the way potato crops develop, grow and yield.
To meet these challenges, potato farmers will need realistic, practical and cost effective measures to enable them to manage these environmental risks and maximise marketing opportunities. LEAF’s Integrated Farm Management approach, our technical management tools and the LEAF Marque standard offer farmers a way to reduce these risks, get recognition in the marketplace and work towards ongoing improvement. Click here to find out more about what we offer and hope to see you at Potatoes In Practice.

RSPB Telegraph Nature of Farming Award

The RSPB Telegraph Nature of Farming Award is the UK’s biggest farm wildlife competition, and a brilliant way to spread the word about the vital work that many farmers are doing for nature. Back in April, we helped the RSPB with a call for entries, and now that call has been answered, with four finalists needing your votes for the award.

RSPB Nature of Farming

We’re pleased to say that out of the four finalists, both Peter Knight, Norfolk Estate, and Rob Allen, Upton Estate, are LEAF members (and Upton Estate is LEAF Marque certified too). Of course, we would love to have another LEAF member win this year.

Last year, LEAF members Somerset and Carolyne Charrington were announced winners of the award and LEAF members also came out on top in the regional finals, including our Vice Chairman, Rob Kynaston winning in Shropshire. The award gained a lot of momentum last year, with lots of media coverage and twitter activity, resulting in 22,000 people taking part and voting!

Now’s the time to vote for your favourite, and we hope that will be either Peter or Rob! You can read more about the awards on the RSPB website here.

LEAF’s President’s Event is on the 14th November this year. Need a reminder? Add the event to your diary by downloading the iCal file.

Contract Opportunities

2013 Contract opportunities

Our partnership with Unilever UK and ADM, to increase LEAF Marque certified oilseed rape has been really well received. We have met our targets for 2012 harvest and are now looking for farmers to register with ADM for 2013 contracts. LEAF’s partnership with Unilever UK and ADM is a long term one. It contributes to Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan which requires all of its oilseed rape, which is used in spreads, margarines and mayonnaise products, to be sustainably sourced by 2020. If you would like to know more about contract opportunities, please contact Stuart Carpenter at ADM tel: 01223 265160. Click here to find out how to become LEAF Marque certified.
