LEAF members shine

I am still feeling the warm glow of pride after last week’s Farmers Weekly Awards. Some of our most forward thinking, innovative and hardworking farmers were recognised for their achievements and amongst them, a good number of LEAF members and LEAF Marque growers, namely Guy Poskitt, Rob Allan and John Baker. My congratulations to them all as well as to the many other worthy winners and finalists in this year’s awards. The past year hasn’t been easy. But this has not deterred many wonderful individuals and farming businesses to develop outstanding businesses ready to take on future political, economic and environmental challenges. Trying to determine what these challenges are likely to be will be debated at this year’s President’s Event on the 14th November. I do hope to see many of you there. LEAF members on top at Farmers Weekly Awards 2012

Last week’s Farmers Weekly awards saw some of the industry’s most forward thinking farmers get recognised for their achievements. It was great to see a good sprinkling of LEAF farmers amongst the winners with LEAF Marque carrot producer, Guy Poskitt from East Yorkshire walking away with the top award of Farmers Weekly Farmer of the Year as well as Arable Farmer of the Year. Other LEAF winners were Rob Allan, who manages Upton Estate near Banbury who won Countryside Farmer of the Year and John Baker, from Thoresby Home Farm, in Nottinghamshire who was named Farm Manager of the Year.

LEAF’s President’s Event 2012

What will sustainable food systems look like in the future? What lessons can we learn from the past? These are some of the issues we will be exploring at LEAF’s President’s Event. We have brought together some of the industry’s finest thinkers, academics, technologists and farmers to debate how we can work together to develop new and sustainable ways of feeding a growing world population. Download the programme here and contact Evelyn.See@leafuk.org to book your place by 31st October 2012. Booking is essential for security and catering reasons.

A Showcase for Sustainable Farming

Long standing LEAF members, Overbury Farms, have become the latest farm to be launched as a LEAF Demonstration Farm. Many of you will be forgiven to think that Overbury Farms are already a LEAF Demonstration Farm! They have taken a very active involvement in all our activities since they joined us in 2003 – they were one of the first farms to sign up for our very first Open Farm Sunday back in 2006 and have achieved LEAF Marque certification on all their lamb.

Sharing Successes

Plans are well underway for next year’s Open Farm Sunday on the 9th June. We would like to see more LEAF members and LEAF Marque growers get involved. We know you are already producing great food with environmental care and we’d like you to tell others about what you do and why you do it! You don’t have to put on a big event – a simple farm walk for family and neighbours is just fine! You can register to open up at www.farmsunday.org from the 1st December, in the meantime, take a look at our latest Sharing Successes brochure setting out this year’s highlights.
